چکیده

Multiagent distributed resource allocation requires that agents act on limited, localized information with minimum communication overhead in order to optimize the distribution of available resources. When requirements and constraints are dynamic, learning agents may be needed to allow for adaptation. One way of accomplishing learning is to observe past outcomes, using such information to improve future decisions. When limits in agents’ memory or observation capabilities are assumed, one must decide on how large should the observation window be. We investigate how this decision influences both agents’ and system’s performance in the context of a special class of distributed resource allocation problems, namely dispersion games. We show by numerical experiments over a specific dispersion game (theMinority Game) that in such scenario an agent’s performance is non-monotonically correlated with her memory size when all other agents are kept unchanged. We then provide an information-theoretic explanation for the observed behaviors, showing that a downward causation effect takes place.

Distribution of Health Resource Allocation in the Fars Province Using the Scalogram Analysis Technique in 2011

The importance of health indicators in the recent years has created challenges in resource allocation. Balanced and fair distribution of health resources is one of the main principles in achieving equity. The goal of this cross-sectional descriptive study, conducted in 2010, was to classify health structural indicators in the Fars province using the scalogram technique. Health structural indica...

Performance-Based Resource Allocation in Higher Education: A Black Box Containing the Paradox of Increasing Efficiency and Decreasing Productivity

To cope with escalating financial resource limitations from both expanding demands for higher education and experiencing a relatively reduction in public support, higher education units have profoundly adopted a performance-based resource allocation mechanism in recent years. Nevertheless, empirical evaluation findings show that the presumed improvement in performance has not been fulfilled. Us...

Multi-objective and Scalable Heuristic Algorithm for Workflow Task Scheduling in Utility Grids

To use services transparently in a distributed environment, the Utility Grids develop a cyber-infrastructure. The parameters of the Quality of Service such as the allocation-cost and makespan have to be dealt with in order to schedule workflow application tasks in the Utility Grids. Optimization of both target parameters above is a challenge in a distributed environment and may conflict one an...

Agents' Bidding Strategies in a Combinatorial Auction Controlled Grid Environment

We present an agent-based simulation environment for resource allocation in a distributed computer system that employs a combinatorial task scheduler. Our environment enables the simulation of a mechanism for the simultaneous allocation of resources like CPU time (CPU), communication bandwidth (NET), volatile (MEM) and non-volatile memory (DSK) in the distributed computer system. In contrast to...

Cycle Time Optimization of Processes Using an Entropy-Based Learning for Task Allocation

Cycle time optimization could be one of the great challenges in business process management. Although there is much research on this subject, task similarities have been paid little attention. In this paper, a new approach is proposed to optimize cycle time by minimizing entropy of work lists in resource allocation while keeping workloads balanced. The idea of the entropy of work lists comes fr...
